More Explanations About Your Amazing Body!

Why Does Your Heart Beat?

Your heart beats to pump blood and oxygen around your body.  People think your heart is the same size as your fist and that it is a muscle!  How can anyone believe that?  People think it is very soft!  Wow!  Ok, I'll tell you now how the heart works.
First, blood goes to your heart from the body.  It goes around the heart and out to pump the blood cells.  Interesting fact!  Your heart beats once a second for the whole of your life.  So your heart is very busy!

How Does the Heart Work?

The heart is a muscle that pumps blood through the body.  It pumps 1000 times and when  you are asleep too.  It's busy and important.
The heart pumps blood to every part of the body.  Blood flows in one direction.
The heart looks like an upside pear shape.  It carries away waste from your body.
What an amazing thing it is!

Our Amazing Body!

Room 10 have been very busy learning about how different parts of the body work including:  the brain, the lungs, and the heart.  Children are now getting ready to find out answers to their own questions about the body to present to the class.

Here are some of the explanations that children in room 10 have written in the last two weeks.

The Brain

Your brain is soft and squishy like a sponge.  The brain helps you think and talk.  Your brain sends electrical signals all around your body.  Like when you have a bath, if you put your foot in and the water is too cold, your sensors will go down to your feet and back to your brain.  That's when you would say, "Brr, this water is too cold".  You know, all of this happens in a third of a second!
Your brain controls everything you do, even when you blink.  That's pretty amazing!

The Brain

The brain is like a pinkish, squishy sponge that sends messages to all parts of your body.  When you are an adult, your brain weighs about 3 pounds.   The brain is your boss in your body.  The shape of the brain is round like an oval or a circle.  It is in your skull and found in your head.  One part of your brain controls your the right side and one part controls the left side.  Your brain sends electrical signals to your muscles telling them to move.  So the brain is very busy!

The Tongue

The tongue is covered with tiny taste sensors.  These are called taste buds.  The taste buds are on different parts of your tongue to sense different flavours.  The front of your tongue is sweet and the side of your tongue is salt and sour but the back of your tongue is bitter.
Your nose can sense about 300 different smells.  If you didn't have a sense of smell, you wouldn't be able to smell nice things such as flowers and perfume!  Your sense of smell warns you if food is rotten before you eat it.  But the tongue also helps you talk as well as to eat.

The Heart

You may not know it, but your heart is actually there to keep you alive.  It helps you in so many ways like breathing, getting carbon dioxide out of your body and so much more.
If you didn't know, your heart pumps blood so if you are injured and start bleeding, it may hurt and you may feel faint because you are losing blood.   Did you know your heart has tubes called veins that travel through and within your body carrying blood?  So the heart is very important.

The Brain

You may not know it but you have a boss like an adult at work in your body.  Your brain is the boss of your body.  It tells you to do every single thing.  You use your brain for everything and I mean everything.
In your brain you have two different sides.  Your right side controls your left side and the left part controls your right side.  The biggest part of your brain is called your cerebrum.

Do You Think You Can Taste Without Smell

Do you think you can taste without smell?  If you said"yes", you are right and you are wrong!
Tiny particles of smell go in the air and your nose smell sensors tell your brain so you know what you smell.  That also helps you taste what you are smelling.
You can still taste without smell but it doesn't taste the same.
Your nose can smell 3000 different smells.  You don't just have a nose to smell nice things.  You also have it to warn you if things are rotten so the nose is there to keep you safe.

The Lungs

The lungs are like two fists split up from each other.  They are like a balloon going up and down, up and down and keep doing it all day and all night.  The lungs help you breathe.  If you smoke, this means your lungs are black and you might get cancer.  They feel like sponges and your lungs are in your chest.
